Understanding Variable Speed Pumps: Ben Honadel Pools by Ben
An introduction to simple pool hydraulics, how pumps move water, how variable speed pumps work, what the service company wants the pump to do, and how to use a variable speed pump to make your job easier.
I started servicing pools in 1986 as a job to pay my way through college. In 1996 I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, with financial support by the Guy Muto scholarship. I found that with a mortgage, wife and two kids I could not afford to leave the pool industry so I applied my economics training to grow my pool business. In addition, I became more involved in my IPSSA chapter, holding the offices of sick route chairman and treasurer. Through IPSSA I had access to many pool equipment training classes and learned to repair and install pool equipment. I learned that I could replace an old brass 2 hp pump that uses 2400 watts with a much better hydraulically designed 3/4 hp plastic pump that uses 1200 watts and save a ton of electricity. When variable speed pumps came out I found that they can do the same flow as the 3/4 hp pump but used only 300 watts. Some of the manufacturers, seeing our equipment sales volume increasing, asked for ideas to make their pumps easier to use. Now variable speed pumps are easier to use, have dropped in price, and have larger rebates. Teaching at the WPSS is my way of giving back to the pool industry.
